Smaller City Park golf plan approved
With an eye toward closing a long-discussed deal with a golf developer in the next few months, the City Park Improvement Association gave its unanimous approval Tuesday to a scaled-down plan that reduces by 20 percent the land set aside for a proposed championship course.

City Park tennis complex opens this week
On Thursday morning, park officials will cut the ribbon at their new $3.9 million tennis complex on a once-dormant tract along Marconi Drive between Harrison Avenue and Interstate 610. The new 16-acre tennis complex will offer 16 hard courts and 10 clay courts.

President Barack Obama visits Columbia Parc
President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu on toured Columbia Parc on Sunday, August 29th during his visit to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The President was interviewed for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams from block 8 of our community. He and the First Lady visited the home of one of our residents and took photos with other residents and staff.

Mayor Landrieu Praises Columbia Parc at NPC Function
Mayor Mitch Landrieu praises Columbia Parc as a model for place-based holistic neighborhood development during his speech before the National Press Club in Washington, DC on August 19th. "When HUD Secretary Shawn Donovan came to New Orleans last spring, he went to Columbia Parc... The master plan for the surrounding neighborhood includes middle schools and high schools, an early childhood learning center, a recreational facility, libraries, playgrounds, retail, and yes, green space, all to serve one neighborhood in New Orleans."

A SPECIAL DELIVERY FROM FEDEX
Business logistics and overnight courier giant FedEx has awarded the Bayou District Foundation a $30,000 grant to support Columbia Parc's Business Center and Internet Café. The grant will equip these resident amenities with 19 computers, two printers, and a scanner. Plans for incorporating the donation into resident services will include such areas as job résumé writing workshops and other supportive job, career development, and training opportunities.

Ribbon cutting ceremony by HUD Secretary, Shaun Donovan
Columbia Parc gains national attention when Secretary Shaun Donovan and Columbia Parc’s development team (Columbia Residential) along with former neighborhood resident Chantrese Wilson, cut the red ribbon signifying Columbia Parc’s formal opening. Impressed by Columbia Parc’s design and concept, Donovan remarked, “I saw a community room, computer room, a whole set of amenities here that I think will ensure kids grow up with a real chance at opportunity. I also saw a design that is going to provide security and safety for residents."
